People who have indoor and outdoor allergies are sensitive to pollen and mold spores.
Tiny grains of pollen and mold blow around in the air outside. Pollen comes from grasses, weeds, and trees. Outdoor mold spores come mostly from fallen leaves and rotting wood.
Breathing in pollen or outdoor mold spores triggers the body to make chemicals that cause allergy symptoms.
Histamine and leukotrienes (loo-ko-TRY-eens) are 2 of the chemicals that the body makes. These and other chemicals cause symptoms such as stuffy, itchy, runny nose; and sneezing. Many allergy medicines block chemicals in the body that cause allergy symptoms.
Not all allergy medicines are the same:
- Some are medicines that have to be sprayed into the nose, which some people may not prefer
- Some work only on specific symptoms, like a stuffy nose
- Some allergy medicines can make you drowsy
- Most work by blocking histamine
SINGULAIR® (montelukast sodium) is a prescription medicine approved to help control asthma in adults and children as young as 12 months and to help relieve the symptoms of indoor and outdoor allergies (outdoor allergies in adults and children as young as 2 years, and indoor allergies in adults and children as young as 6 months).
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
SINGULAIR should be taken once a day, as prescribed. SINGULAIR is available by prescription only.
Side effects are generally mild and vary by age, and may include headache, ear infection, sore throat, and upper respiratory infection. Side effects generally did not stop patients from taking SINGULAIR. SINGULAIR should not be taken by people who are sensitive to any of its ingredients.
